Following two straight years without a single Tomb Raider game, Eidos were a heartbeat away from bankruptcy, bouncing checks and engaging in a lot of creative accounting. Naturally, the returns were diminishing with each title. Eidos was facing serious financial troubles at the time: the company were kept afloat almost entirely thanks to the revenue generated by Tomb Raider franchise. The game was prepped for launch in May, along with press releases, even though Eidos were well-aware that it was nowhere near being completed. In late-March, Eidos suddenly announced that the game would be released before summer vacation. They were on-track to meet the new deadline, and most likely would have delivered a finished product with all of the content included.

Core Design missed all the deadlines in 2002, but they negotiated a release date for November '03. Christmas Rushed: The game was in Development Hell for a while, and then rushed out for the Christmas season, which was one of the reasons the game has a ton of cut content and bugs up the wazoo. It helps that the song isn't actually played in the game itself, distancing itself more from the source. Breakaway Pop Hit: The game has a tendency to be forgotten compared to others in the franchise, but the promo song "Angel of Darkness" has become popular.
